Shanghai has built the world's first 5G industrial park, according to a presentation during the 5G project application competition held in Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu province, on Sept 5.

More than 30 industrial innovative application scenarios are supposedly being developed for the industrial park, whose general assembly manufacturing center is connected to a 5G network.

The park is being jointly developed by Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co Ltd and the Shanghai branch of China Unicom. It won first place in the 5G application competition.

The competition, run by China Unicom, has been going on since April, with more than 500 teams from across the country participating. After two rounds of competition, over 30 teams qualified for the finals.

Two other projects also won first place in the competition. The first is a 5G-based all-media platform that allows people to enjoy 5G ultra high-definition video live broadcasting services and a VR panoramic video live broadcasting service, while the second is a platform that allows court trials to be done remotely through the use of an intelligent public service system developed by the Guangzhou branch of China Unicom and the Guangzhou Internet Court.

"Unlike traditional brick-and-mortar-courts, internet courts are not limited by time and space, and the litigation process can be done on Internet," said Tian Hui, vice-president of the Guangzhou Internet Court. "Internet courts offer a whole new experience for those who file lawsuits," Tian said.

Other projects that qualified for the finals include a 5G-based industrial drone and a remote pathology consultation platform, both developed by China Unicom and its partners.

China Unicom has explored 5G technology in depth and made many breakthroughs in news media, industry, and public transportation. It has worked with its partners to establish a 5G application innovation alliance, aiming to build a new model for 5G-related industries.

China Unicom announced at the contest that a launch ceremony for 1-million-yuan ($139,923) 5G-related projects will be held at the award ceremony on Sept 6.

5G is expected to be at least 10 times faster than 4G, and its impressive capacity to connect things will make smart factories, self-driving vehicles, and other advanced applications possible.

China is set to become the world's largest 5G market by 2025 with 460 million 5G users, according to a forecast by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association, an industry group.
